Micro-Nursery: Growing Trees, Empowering Women, and Protecting Land

In a country like Bangladesh, where land is scarce, opportunities for women are often limited, and transportation challenges hinder large-scale environmental efforts, TREE is introducing a smart, sustainable solution: the Micro-Nursery.

This innovative initiative reimagines how tree seedlings are produced and distributed. Unlike traditional large-scale nurseries, Micro-Nurseries are small, community-based setups that address three critical challenges in Bangladesh:

  1. Land Scarcity: Agricultural land is limited and often prioritized for food production. Micro-Nurseries require minimal space and can be established in household courtyards or unused plots, making tree production possible without displacing food crops.
  2. Women’s Economic Empowerment: Bangladesh is home to over 18 million unpaid housewives who contribute significantly to their families through domestic responsibilities, yet have limited access to formal income opportunities. Through Micro-Nurseries, we are engaging these women as TREEpreneurs—enabling them to grow saplings at home and earn income in the process.
  3. Safe and Efficient Transportation: Transporting fragile seedlings over long distances is costly and often leads to damage or loss. Micro-Nurseries are locally distributed, reducing the need for complex logistics and allowing communities to access healthy plants without long and risky transport routes.

Micro-Nursery is more than just a planting solution—it is a social, economic, and environmental innovation. It empowers women, conserves valuable land, and creates a decentralized system of seedling production that can support reforestation and greening efforts across the country.

Through this initiative, TREE envisions a Bangladesh where millions of trees are grown not just for the planet, but by the people—right in their own communities.
